Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is not only related to providing care for individual athletes and elite sporting teams
SEM is a broad discipline incorporating:
- Management of musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries sustained during physical activity, recreational and elite exercise or manual labour
- Management of the medical problems of exercising individuals at all ages and all levels of participation
- The pathophysiology, biomechanics and optimisation of human performance at an individual and team level
- The use of exercise as a therapeutic modality in the promotion of health and physical fitness as well as the treatment and prevention of disease or injury
Sport and Exercise Medicine Specialists are also experts on the discrete exercise needs of certain population groups such as the elderly, those with disabilities and children. They have expertise in the medical needs of sporting individuals, sporting teams and sporting events as well as all aspects of the medical care of individuals exercising in extreme environments and pharmacological and ethical issues involved in drugs and doping in sport.
